The Brain Story

Last week, my TOK class had been watching this movie including the other TOK classes as well called THE BRAIN STORY. I found it as a very interesting movie as it tells about different cases about people's brain that effects their visualization.

There are several case studies that we watched. First, there's a woman who was about in her 40's who had a problem in her brain system because of a car accident that makes her eyes uncomfortable when looking at moving objects. Doctors had studied her by giving her tests like there's three dots in the computer and the woman should say something when she sees a dot moving. But somehow, when the object had moved, she had realized it for like a few seconds later.

The case was followed by a man who also had his brain system damaged due to a car accident can't recognize faces at all. He just can't recognize a face even when he can see the eyes, nose, lips and everything. The doctor showed him pictures of objects that he can easily name but when a picture of a famous person known as Marilyn Monroe, he still can't tell. A last picture of himself and his daughter was shown but still he can't recognize it. I can't imagine if I can't recognize anyone, solitary would come over me as dark as the shadows.

Another man was the vice versa. He can recognize faces but can't define objects. A doctor tested him by showing slides of pictures and one of them is the playing cards. He saw the playing cards as blotches of inks in cards but somehow he can see the faces of the kings, queens, and jacks. If I put myself in his shoes, I would be very miserable because I can't see the beautiful images of the world anymore but just blotches of paint and I can only guess where I am.

Last case, there's an old woman who doesn't pay attention to the left side of anything. The doctor tested her by giving her a picture of a cat that have two tails. She drew the full head but ended with only the half part of the body. Then the doctor told her what she had missed and she was really surprised that she forgot the other half even when she can actually see everything.

I just could never imagine if I have to live like them.

Being unable to see moving objects while I really enjoy sports a lot.

Being unable to recognize faces and have to pretend to love an unknown person but only with a recognizable voice.

Being unable to define objects, what can I do then?

However, we should really thank GOD for the oppurtunities to be able to see everything that he had created. Don't ever regret that you can see things even when sometimes you wish you wouldn't. Think about the unfortunate people who need to suffer for the rest of their lives, unable to see the creation of God. THE BRAIN STORY is a great movie that introduce the outside world to the world of a unique damaged brain system.

Question for readers:

What would you do if you can't see moving objects, recognize faces or define objects?
